This Week’s New Releases + Game News: September 14, 2015

vgl-pickThe Video Game Librarian Pick of the Week is
Super Mario Maker (Wii U), a level creation game for Nintendo’s most beloved character. Super Mario Maker allows players to create levels based on characters and obstacles found in Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U. After they’re finished, they can play these levels and share them with the world through the game’s built-in level browser. The creativity seen in some of the demo levels is outstanding and the game comes with 60 pre-built levels to get players started… so it also serves double duty as the latest side-scrolling Mario game.

Another interesting new release this week is Tearaway Unfolded (PS4), Media Molecule’s adaptation of a puzzle platformer they originally released for the Vita in 2013. Taking place in a “papercraft world,” players have to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles to make it to the end.

vgl-pickThe Video Game Librarian Pick of the Week is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One), the final game in Hideo Kojima’s sprawling Metal Gear saga. Metal Gear Solid pushed the stealth action genre to new heights of popularity when it was released in 1998, and this sequel takes the genre even further with a massive world and a wild story.

Also of note this week is Mad Max (PC, PS4, Xbox One), an open world adaptation of the famed film franchise. It’s not a direct remake of any one film, but a new story that takes place within the same world as Mad Max, The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and Mad Max: Fury Road (which was also released on DVD/Blu-ray earlier this month). A complete list of this week’s new releases can be found here:

vgl-pickThe Video Game Librarian Pick of the Week is Madden NFL 16 (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One), the latest football simulation from EA Sports. This year’s game focuses on improved passing/receiver controls, but I think football fans are going to love it all the same.

That said, a number of big games were released this week and almost any one of them could have been the Pick of the Week including Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Until Dawn, Dishonored: Definitive Edition, and Disney Infinity: Star Wars. Those titles, and a few others, are listed right here:

vgl-pickThe Video Game Librarian Pick of the Week is LBX: Little Battlers Experience, yet another “teens force tiny creatures to do battle” game from Japan. Developed by Level-5 and published by Nintendo, the 3DS title is based on the popular manga and anime series also created by Level-5. In the game, a group of kids create tiny palm-sized robots that do battle in slightly less-tiny arenas.

vgl-pickThe Video Game Librarian Pick of the Week is Rare Replay, a compilation for the Xbox One that covers the extensive history of Rare. As a developer, Rare was at the top of their game in the late 90s, and this collection includes all of their biggest hits (minus the Nintendo-published titles, of course). It’s perfect for anyone looking to relive the glory days of the NES, Super NES, and Nintendo 64.
